  • Grimm's Fairy Stories

    Jacob Grimm, Wilhelm Grimm

    Audio CD (Bolinda/Audible audio, July 1, 2014)
Full of magic and trickery, Grimm's Fairy Stories have delighted generations with such timeless classics as Cinderella, Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, Snow White, and Rapunzel. They are the stories we've known since we were children. But the works originally collected by the Brothers Grimm in the early 1800s are not necessarily the versions we heard before bedtime. They're darker and don't always end very happily – but they're often far more interesting. Collected here are the complete fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm, many of which begin with the familiar refrain: “once upon a time” – but end with something unexpected and fascinating! The complete list of tales recounted here is: • The Goose-Girl • The Little Brother and Little Sister • Hansel and Gretel • Oh, If I Could but Shiver! • Dummling and the Three Feathers • Little Snow-White • Frederick and Catherine • The Valiant Little Tailor • Little Red-Cap • The Golden Goose • Bearskin • Cinderella • Faithful John • The Water of Life • Thumbling • Briar Rose • The Six Swans • Rapunzel • Mother Holle • The Frog Prince • The Travels of Tom Thumb • Snow White and Rose Red • The Three Little Men in the Wood • Rumpelstiltskin • Little One-Eye, Two-Eyes, and Three-Eyes

language (Sheba Blake Publishing, Sept. 1, 2018)
Grimm's Fairy Tales is a collection of German fairy tales published by the Grimm brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm. The collection is commonly known in English as Grimm's Fairy Tales. The first volume of the first edition was published in 1812, containing 86 stories; the second volume of 70 stories followed in 1815. For the second edition, two volumes were issued in 1819 and a third in 1822, totalling 170 tales. The third edition appeared in 1837; fourth edition, 1840; fifth edition, 1843; sixth edition, 1850; seventh edition, 1857. Stories were added, and also subtracted, from one edition to the next, until the seventh held 211 tales. All editions were extensively illustrated, first by Philipp Grot Johann and, after his death in 1892, by German illustrator Robert Leinweber. The first volumes were much criticized because, although they were called "Children's Tales", they were not regarded as suitable for children, both for the scholarly information included and the subject matter. Many changes through the editions – such as turning the wicked mother of the first edition in Snow White and Hansel and Gretel (shown in original Grimm stories as Hänsel and Grethel) to a stepmother, were probably made with an eye to such suitability. They removed sexual references--such as Rapunzel's innocently asking why her dress was getting tight around her belly, and thus naively revealing to the fairy her pregnancy and the prince's visits--but, in many respects, violence, particularly when punishing villains, was increased. In 1825, the Brothers published their Kleine Ausgabe or "small edition", a selection of 50 tales designed for child readers. This children's version went through ten editions between 1825 and 1858.

  • Cinderella / Aschenputtel

    Jacob Grimm, Wilhelm Grimm

    eBook (, May 20, 2014)
This edition contains the English translation and the original text in German."Cinderella", or "The Little Glass Slipper" (French: "Cendrillon, ou La petite Pantoufle de Verre", Italian: "Cenerentola", German: "Aschenputtel"), is a European folk tale embodying a myth-element of unjust oppression in "Histoires ou contes du temps passé" published by Charles Perrault in 1697, and by the Brothers Grimm in their folk tale collection "Grimms' Fairy Tales". Although both the story's title and the character's name change in different languages, in English-language folklore "Cinderella" is the archetypal name. The word "Cinderella" has, by analogy, come to mean one whose attributes were unrecognized, or one who unexpectedly achieves recognition or success after a period of obscurity and neglect. The still-popular story of "Cinderella" continues to influence popular culture internationally, lending plot elements, allusions, and tropes to a wide variety of media. The Aarne–Thompson system classifies Cinderella as "the persecuted heroine". The story of Rhodopis about a Greek slave girl who marries the king of Egypt is considered the earliest known variant of the "Cinderella" story and many variants are known throughout the world."Aschenputtel" (bei Bechstein "Aschenbrödel") ist eine im europäischen Kulturraum weit verbreitete Märchenfigur, die im deutschsprachigen Raum vor allem durch die Märchensammlung der Brüder Grimm in Erinnerung geblieben ist.
